When I got married I took my husband’s name because I felt that we were becoming a new family and we should have the same name. I took his name rather than asking him to adopt my family name because I am not particularly close to my father’s family and my husband’s family feel more like real family to me.
I don’t think giving up my name to take my husband’s name was a big deal. I don’t think anyone treats me differently because I’m Mrs. Somebody. However, there is one thing that REALLY bothers me. Whenever we eat out, the waiter gives the little folder with the bill to my husband. I put my card in it, with the first name Abigail - clearly a woman’s name, but the server almost always gives it back to him to sign.
