Cable knit mittens pattern

Mittens to match the cowl I made the other week:

The pattern is included after the break but be warned, they are definitely a size small. They’re not reversible either, I just made two pairs.

You will need:

  • Size 7 / 4.5 mm double-pointed knitting needles.
  • 1 skein of worsted/medium weight yarn.
  • An extra needle to make the cables.
  • A stitch holder - another extra needle or a piece of string to hold the thumb stitches

The border

  1. Bind on 32 stitches.
  2. The border is twelve rows of moss stitch:
    Rows 1 & 2:  { k2, p2 } repeat until end of row
    Rows 3 & 4:  { p2, k2 } repeat until end of row
    Rows 5 & 6:  { k2, p2 } repeat until end of row
    Rows 7 & 8:  { p2, k2 } repeat until end of row
    Rows 9 & 10:  { k2, p2 } repeat until end of row
    Rows 11 & 12:  { p2, k2 } repeat until end of row

Main hand - This is where the cables begin.

  • Start counting your rows from 1 again. The knitted stitches will become your cables.
  • Row 1:  { p1, make 1, k4, make1, k5, p1, make 1, k2, make 1, k3 } repeat once
  • Rows 2 - 6:  { p2, k10, p2, k6 } repeat once
  • Row 7: You will create left twists on the narrower cables (those that are 6 stitches wide).
    • p2, k10, p2
    • Create a left twist. Slip the first 3 stitches of the cable onto your spare needle and hold it in front of your work, as shown in Image 1.

Knit the next 3 stitches on your left needle, keeping the spare needle in front of your work. You should see the beginnings of a twist, as shown in Image 2.

Next, slip the three stitches on your spare needle back onto your left needle and knit them. You have created a left twist.
    • Repeat the previous two steps to finish the row. You should have two left twists.
  • Rows 8 - 10:  { p2, k10, p2, k6 } repeat
  • Row 11: You will create a right twist on the wider cables (those that are 10 stitches wide).
    • p2
    • Create a right twist. Slip the first 5 stitches of the cable onto your spare needle and hold it behind your work.

Knit the next 5 stitches on your left needle, keeping the spare needle behind your work.

Next, slip the 5 stitches on your spare needle back onto your left needle and knit them. This can get a little tight and fiddly. You have created a right twist.
    • p2, k6
    • Repeat the previous three steps eight times to finish the row. You should have eight right twists in total.
  • Rows 12 & 13:  { p2, k10, p2, k6 } repeat until end of row
  • Row 14: repeat the steps detailed above in row 7
  • Rows 15 - 20:  { p2, k10, p2, k6 } repeat until end of row
  • Row 21: repeat the steps detailed above in row 7
  • Row 22:  { p2, k10, p2, k6 } repeat until end of row
  • Row 23: Begin to form the thumb -
    • p2, k10, p2, k6
    • p2, k10, p2, make 1, k6, make 1
  • Rows 24:  { p2, k10, p2, k6 } repeat until end of row
  • Row 25: Continue to form the thumb -
    • p2, k10, p2, k6
    • p2, k10, p2, make 1, p1, k6, p1, make 1
  • Row 26: Continue to form the thumb -
    • p2, k10, p2, k6
    • p2, k10, p2, make 1, p2, k6, p2, make 1
  • Row 27: Continue to form the thumb and repeat the steps detailed above in row 7 to create left twists on the narrow cables -
    • p2, k10, p2, k6 (with left twist)
    • p2, k10, p2, make 1, k1, p2, k6 (with left twist), p2, k1, make 1
  • Row 28: Continue to form the thumb -
    • p2, k10, p2, k6
    • p2, k10, p2, make 1, k2, p2, k6, p2, k2, make 1
  • Row 29: Continue to form the thumb -
    • p2, k10, p2, k6
    • p2, k10, p2, k1, make 1, k2, p2, k5, p2, k2, make 1, k1

    • p2, k10, p2, k3
    • Move the next 14 stitches on to your stitch holder
    • Knit the remaining 3 stitches of the row - you will not return to the stitches on the holder until you have completed the hand.

  • Row 61:  { k1, k2tog } repeat until end of row
  • Row 62:  { k2tog } repeat until end of row
  • Finish the hand - you should have 8 stitches left, close them off using Kitchener stitch. There’s a helpful guide here: http://home.howstuffworks.com/knitting-instructions12.htm

The thumb

  • You are going to make the thumb starting from the 14 stitches on the holder. First, pick up two stitches over the gap between the thumb and the hand, then separate the 16 stitches over 3 double pointed needles.
  • The picked up stitches will become knit stitches - so a complete row will be k6, p2, k6, p2. Work 15 rows, creating left twists on the cables (the k6 bits) at rows 3 and 10.
  • Rows 16 & 17:  { k2tog } repeat until end of row
  • Finish the thumb - you should have 4 stitches left, close them off using Kitchener stitch.
