I’m almost done with the first half of a knitting experiment: faux bois fingerless gloves!
I improvised the pattern so the second one should look quite different. I did at least remember to write down things like when and how I made the thumb part so they’ll match in terms of structure but each glove will have a different texture.

Knitting application v1.3 →
While avoiding both work and “work” I made lots of improvements to my knitting color chart maker. It includes quite a few changes - you can set gauge, there is a paintbrush option, an eraser, and an undo button. I think that’s it for version 1.x. Version 2 will likely make it possible to add stitch symbols (increase, decrease, etc) to the printable chart. There might also be a...

I am officially done with my first quarter as a PhD student. I plan to take a week to have some sort of a life then it will be straight back to work.
First, I’m going to finish the mittens I’ve been working on then I’m off to the walk-in hairdresser to ask for a Ramona Flowers haircut without the crazy colors. Tomorrow I’m going to do nothing and not feel guilty about it.

The front of the family crest sweater commissioned for my friend’s son is finally finished.
It’s been driving me crazy because it’s super slow going so I’m taking an extended break. In the meantime I made this:

Thanks!
The official title is Information Science. My general area is human computer interaction and my focus will be how new hardware interfaces shape the way people learn (for better or worse). I’ll also be looking at accessibility issues.

As the start of my PhD is imminent and I’ll once again be lugging round a ton of stuff, I took a break from knitting the coat of arms sweater to make myself a messenger bag.
I put lots of pockets inside to reduce fumbling time.
One of the pockets is attached with velcro so I can pull it out and use it as a mini shoulder bag.

A friend of mine commissioned me to make a sweater for her toddler. She wants it to have a family coat of arms on the front and lots of little castles (a specific castle that used to be the family seat) around the waistband. Aside from the fact that I’ve never met anyone with a coat of arms and a castle before, the weird thing is I happen to have been to the castle in question on a random...

Today is my last day at my once-a-week job at a graphic design studio. It’s finally starting to hit home that we’re actually moving to Seattle and leaving Boston for good in less than two weeks. We’ll visit, of course, but I can’t see us ever living here again.
A little under two years ago we moved from England to Boston and I felt more prepared for that - I was counting...

I went to my cousin’s wedding a few months ago and they did this, and it kind of hurt my heart. I mean, I know her, she is an amazingly driven person with a very strong personality and if anyone’s “wearing the pants” of her relationship it’s her. And these were clearly her…

This dress is totally going to be inspiration for some future project. Not the material so much as the cut/shape/whatever-you-call-it.

Today I finally mastered the straight line with a sewing machine. So far I have half a pair of shorts. Tomorrow, if all goes to plan, I will master the machined buttonhole and have a whole pair of shorts. Then it will be the first thing I’ve finished without getting scared and reverting to hand sewing. Regardless, it will be the first pattern I’ve designed with legs.

So far, semi-unemployment is treating me well.
I’m making progress on Milly’s blanket but I think I may have to find somewhere with air conditioning to knit in for the next couple of months.
I’ve also made a good start on my iPhone app and I think it will be heading for app store submission in the near future. It’s a health related app, to do with asthma care, inspired...

Hello internet.
It’s been a while since I’ve been on the internet. All jobs have been crazy busy and a little dramatic lately. On Monday I found out that the start-up I’ve doing full time work for has decided to stop all development so I’ll be out of a job at the end of next week. My initial reaction was that the timing couldn’t have been worse - we’re supposed to be moving...

Apple vs. Adobe - Steve Jobs' open letter →
As a fan, user, and developer for both Apple and Adobe products, I’m starting to feel like a child watching her parents go through a messy divorce. I was totally leaning towards Adobe’s side but, since Steve Jobs published this, I understand Apple and I’m leaning the other way. I don’t want to have to deal with the developer version of visitation rights, can’t they...

Stitches and Purls: Fall 2010 RTW →
It may seem strange to be looking to the fall already… but hey - the fashion world has already done so. I recently got the idea that I needed to catch up on all of the fall shows so that I can start thinking about new designs.
As I was going through a few of the slide shows on www.style.com it took longer than I was hoping to find knitwear. No worries though - there was plenty!
What a good...

Today, instead of doing my job, my contract job, making the dress for my friend’s fast-approaching wedding, or casting on for another friend’s cowl, I decided to make some additions to the cardigan I ‘finished’ last week.
You can’t tell from the photo, partly because the cat decided to join in, but I’ve added some buttons and loops inside the open edges on...
